Scaling and Root Planing Overview
If you've developed signs of periodontal (gum) disease, a normal cleaning may not be adequate enough. The first stage of periodontal disease, gingivitis, is commonly corrected with scaling and root planing (SRP). This is a noninvasive procedure done by licensed dentists Drs. Alan and Yonatan Howard to help eliminate gingivitis by removing built-up tartar and plaque from the gumline. With specific instruments, a scaling and root planing treatment in The Dental Office Encino cleans the gum pockets, then smoothes the surface of your teeth to avoid further buildup. If you're worried about your gums, find out more about SRP treatments at our office in Encino, CA.

"First time patient here! The moment I walked through the front doors, I felt like I was in an alternate reality. Literally 5 different employees greeted me one right after the other. I have never felt more welcome anywhere in my life. "What IS this place?" I thought to myself. I sat in the waiting area next to the fish tank and enjoyed watching the fish swim around while I waited. A few moments later, I was brought back into the back of the office and to the chair where my cleaning would take place. Rachel took amazing care of me! She noted that they had Netflix and Hulu if I wanted to watch anything during my cleaning and mentioned that the chair had a massage feature if I wanted to use it. Wait, was I at the dentist or the Ritz Carlton? Whaaa? The office was so clean and organized I was overall just so impressed. Each dental patient is in their own area, but the areas are not walled off. So it’s private enough, but you might hear someone else talking to the dentist about a hole in their mouth (true story). I cannot sing Rachel’s praises enough. She explained everything SO thoroughly and really took her time during my cleaning. I thought it was really cool that they include an oral cancer screening during the exam, I had never had that done before! After my cleaning, I was able to meet Dr. Howard and Yoni (also Dr. Howard), the father and son that run the business. They are SO nice and attentive. They were fantastic with breaking down everything on my xrays and explaining what was going on in terms I could understand. I even went home with a little goodie bag that included a cute branded chapstick. After the appointment, one of the receptionists walked me through my bill/estimates for future appointments in this fancy private conference room. I’m telling you, I almost felt like I was at a spa. I’m coming back for sure!"- M.M. / Yelp / Sep 29, 2021
At your dental examination, Dr. Alan or Yonatan Howard will measure how deep your gum pockets are. In the event your gum pockets, also called sulcus, are more than three millimeters, then a scaling and root planing therapy might be recommended. SRP will help to decrease the size of the gum pockets so bacteria and plaque can't accumulate in this region, which contributes to the initial phase of periodontal disease (gingivitis). A number of the early signs of gingivitis are chronic bad breath, in addition to gums that are bleed easily, are tender, swollen, look red, or are starting to recede. When gingivitis is discovered in the early stages, one or more scaling and root planing procedures is enough, but when periodontal disease has reached later phases (regular or advanced periodontitis), then you might need a more advanced procedure.
What To Expect
SRP is a deep cleaning that may be done in our office using local anesthesia on the areas of your mouth being addressed. We might also suggest sedation methods if you are feeling worried about having SRP. Dr. Howard will utilize a scaling tool to clean the tartar and plaque below the gumline. Dr. Howard will subsequently plane or smooth the surface of the enamel to decrease the area where tartar and plaque may get caught to avoid future problems.
Following your SRP therapy, you might notice greater tooth and gum sensitivity, in addition to some tingling from the local anesthesia. Dr. Howard may write a prescription for antibiotics that will help remove any residual bacteria from your gums. You should stick to a good oral hygiene regimen at home, including daily flossing and brushing, to keep your gums and teeth healthy and clean. You also need to schedule yearly dental examinations so Dr. Howard can evaluate the health of your teeth and gums, as well as bi-annual visits to get your teeth cleaned. Based on the initial state of your mouth and your home care following an SRP therapy, you might need two or three more scaling and root planing procedures to completely restore your mouth.
SRP is a very common procedure for treating gum disease that's normally paid for in part by dental insurance. A member of our team will get in touch with your provider to ascertain your policy and individual expenses. If you don't have dental insurance, then The Dental Office Encino takes several payments, including low-interest financing, which may be talked about in your appointment.
